A Beautiful word picture of God’s loving care of His children.
The Lord is my Shepherd I shall want.
This word picture of a shepherd leading his sheep to pasture signifies a personal relationship of believer’s complete dependance on God for our very lives. Jesus, the Good Shepherd said that He knows His sheep and is known of them: “My sheep know my voice and a stranger they will not follow” (John 10).
He makes me to lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
When we are delivered from the power of darkness, we have been delivered into the Kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:13). The more light that we allow in our lives through God’s Word-spiritual wisdom and understanding, the more darkness that is shed from our lives and we experience “soul restoration”.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for His names sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. For thou are with me. Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Although the thief comes only in order to steal, to kill and to destroy; going to and fro in the earth seeking whom he may devour, Jesus, the Good Shepherd has promised us that He is with us, and He will lead us through the dark places into His marvelous Light.
Thou prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
Do you have any enemies? I use to think: “I don’t have any enemies. I like err-body and err-body likes me”. Well, whether that is true or not, all Christ-followers have spiritual enemies who are hell bent on trying to make our lives as miserable as possible. But God. Can somebody say but God? But God has a plan to defeat every enemy in your life and if you…wait for it, you shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Thou anoint my head with oil. My cup runs over.
The Lord anoints us with a fresh anointing of oil (the oil of Joy) for our journey to refresh our hearts and weary souls, and it is always important to remember that His grace is sufficient for us; because in due season, if we do not faint, we will see our cups running over with the joy of the Lord which is our strength.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
As we enjoy an intimate relationship with our Lord, delighting in Him and His care, protection and provision for us, let us enforce this word picture in our lives with a declaration that “The Lord is my Shepherd and He is well able (and it is His will) to provide everything that I need”.
